The tragic death of Matthew Shepard is, of course, a brutal stab at the integrity of the gay community. However, he is not the first to die in this manner. Sadly, it is safe to say that he will not be the last. I have spoken with many people in the community about this, and everyone is saddened. Strangely, few are empowered. Everyone sees the problem and assumes that there is no way to prevent it from happening again. What happened to Mr. Shepard could have happened to anyone, anywhere, at anytime. What is important to remember though is that although Mr. Shepard was gay...he was a human being. He was a man, murdered because of his sexuality....but still a man. He still deserved the right to live. Mr. Shepard was killed because he had a label placed on him by society. Compassion knows no labels. Now is the time for everyone to join together and mourn this sad event, and use that mourning to spur the feelings of power. Something needs to be done to keep this from happening again.
