I started crying when I first found out just what happened. I was dying
inside to know that people can carry so much hatred. And I think the
community responded not in kind, but en masse. There was a candlelight vigil
in Amherst Common within the week. At Smith, the annual Coming Out Day
Chalking (which has been rescheduled for this Monday, October 19, because
of rain) will be dedicated to Matthew, and information on his death is
being handed out; students are asked to chalk in his memory as well as for
themselves. I was surprised at the national outcry and the rapidity with
which people responded and pulled together. I thank my God for the love
all of us as survivors have shown in the wake of Matthew's death.
