FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) -- An Army private who died after a
barracks fight may have been killed because others thought he was gay,
two gay-rights groups say.
The Lesbian and Gay Coalition for Justice and the Servicemembers Legal
Defense Network said Monday that they questioned several people on and
off the base about the death of Pfc. Barry L. Winchell, 21, of Kansas
City, Mo., and were told that he was killed because some believed he
was gay.
Fort Campbell officials said they have not found any evidence that
Winchell may have been killed because he was gay or perceived to be
gay. They declined to discuss whether they were pursuing the
possibility.
"We have the one soldier in custody who has been charged with
premeditated murder,'' said Maj. Pamela Hart, a Fort Campbell
spokeswoman.
Pvt. Calvin N. Glover, 18, was charged in the July 5 attack. Winchell
died the following day.
