transadvocates.gifDear Fellow Transgender Advocate,

This year we have an opportunity to elect a President who will be the most transgender-supportive in history.

But electing a candidate isn't enough just by itself.  Unless we're visibly and vocally involved with campaigns and giving our time, energy, money, and ideas we will miss out on an opportunity to create a relationship with a President who has already said he's willing to stand with us. That is why we are asking you to join with us in supporting Barack Obama.

The National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force have released a joint publication titled Opening the Door to the Inclusion of Transgender People: The Nine Keys to Making Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Organizations Fully Transgender-Inclusive, geared toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) organizations.

"Transgender inclusion has been an important issue in the LGBT community, particularly in the past year. Yet, many organizations struggle with how exactly to become fully transgender-inclusive. We are excited to offer this free new resource," said Mara Keisling, executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE).

VeteransA new survey has been created to achieve a more accurate picture of the state of the transgender American veteran population. Many of the issues facing transgender veterans are no different than those facing the rest of the transgender community. However negotiating healthcare thru the Veterans Administration and dealing with the Department of Defense poses its own unique set of challenges. This survey is also for those transgender people who are still serving in the military and those veterans who identify and are diagnosed as intersex.

Travel Tips for Transgender People

Many trans people may be anxious about utilizing air travel this holiday season because of heightened airport security. NCTE hopes to lessen this anxiety with its recently released Air Travel Tips for Transgender People, a great resource for holiday travelers.

Topics addressed in this guide include identification issues, dealing with airline and security personnel, luggage and clothing, and security expectations.

NCTE was motivated to provide travel guidelines following the implementation of a new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) policy in 2004 directing agents at security checkpoints to pat-down passengers wearing bulky clothing items.

Our transwomen's bodies come in all colors, shapes and sizes, and all of us need to take care of them. However, good health care can be hard to get, due to discrimination, lack of medical clinicians who understand our needs, and lack of health insurance coverage. To keep our bodies healthy and whole, we must become informed consumers, educating our health care providers and ourselves.

Article by Kai Wright:
Sharmus has been a sex worker for about five years. She started after breaking up with a boyfriend who was supporting her while she was out of work. It was quick money, and, as with many of her transgender friends, she didn't believe there were many other jobs out there for her.

"You have your good nights, and your bad nights," says Sharmus, thirty-five. "There are no fringe benefits. Summer time is the best time; the winter is hard," she explains, casually ticking off the pros and cons of being a prostitute. "It's just hard getting a job. Nobody really wants to hire you, and when they do hire you they give you a hard time."

Sex work was not in her plans back when she transitioned from male to female at age twenty-one. "Sometimes I regret it," she sighs. "My lifetime goal was to be a schoolteacher."

Trans-Gendered: Theology, Ministry, and Communities of Faith
Justin Edward Tanis

In the introduction to Trans-Gendered, Tanis says: "I intend to write about the ways in which religious communities have contributed to our oppression and occasionally, to our liberation. I want to speak, too, about the beauty and power of our lives. We need to think about how to fight back religiously and spiritually, as well as politically." Tanis largely accomplishes this goal.

The book began as a doctoral dissertation, while Tanis was at the San Francisco Theological Seminary, but it is not designed strictly for the academic world: As Tanis states in the books "I am not particularly interested in theories that do not have practical application for trans lives. Tanis writes in the first person, and weaves his own experience as a transgendered clergy person in with the experiences of other transgender individuals.

Although they are often invisible to professionals in the field of aging - and indeed to society in general - transgender (TG) and transsexual (TS) individuals clearly form a more than negligible percentage of the U.S. population. These elders not only require the same care as all older adults, they also need care - and face obstacles - specifically related to their gender status.
